The language of love

Today is February 14, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day. Regardless of its origins and history, we tend to regard today as a celebration of love, predominately romantic love.

Given that this entire blog is dedicated to existentialism and philosophical ideals, it seems relevant to quote the ingenious words of Haddaway and ask – What is love?

What I thought I’d do, instead of answering this age-old question myself, is share some of the greatest quotes about love that I have come across over the years.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

“You who suffer because you love, love still more. To die of love, is to live by it.”
–  Victor Hugo

“Everyone says love hurts, but that is not true. Loneliness hurts. Rejection hurts. Losing someone hurts. Envy hurts. Everyone gets these things confused with love, but in reality love is the only thing in this world that covers up all pain and makes someone feel wonderful again. Love is the only thing in this world that does not hurt.”
–  Meša Selimović

“There is nothing more truly artistic than to love people.”
– Van Gogh

“Love is the greatest link that we have with those who have temporarily left us.”
– Laozi

“There’s a reason we say ‘falling’ into love and not ‘rising’ into love. There is in it the idea of the fall; the curious tie between the fall and the creation – of taking this ghastly risk as the condition of there being life.”
– Alan Watts

“It is good to be loved, but it is profound to be understood”.
– Ellen DeGeneres

“The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering.”
– Ben Okri

“Sometimes I look at people and I make myself try and feel them as more than just a random person walking by. I imagine how deeply they’ve fallen in love, or how much heartbreak they’ve all been through.”
– Spike Jonze

“The future belongs to hearts even more than it does to minds.”
– Victor Hugo

“The relationship of self to other is the complete realisation that loving yourself is impossibly without loving everything defined as other than yourself.”
– Alan Watts

“Your naked body should belong to those who fall in love with your naked soul.”
– Charlie Chaplin

“Today in science we learned that you can never gain cold, you can only have an absence of heart; and it made me think that maybe hatred doesn’t exist, and there’s only an absence of love.”
– Anon

“Humanity should be our race. Love should be our religion.”
– Anon
